The Belfast Giants leading scorer and one of the top young defencemen in the game today have both confirmed their return to Belfast for another season. Both Colin Shields and Davey Phillips are happy to be back with the Giants after a very successful campaign last season that saw them win two of the four major championships up for grabs in the Elite League and play major roles with the GB National Team that took Bronze in Poland in mid-April.
Colin Shields led all British scorers this past season with 92 points including 36 goals, good for third place in the scoring charts of all Elite League players. Shields played all 71 games for the Giants a year ago and was consistent from day one to the final whistle. He is joined for another year by GB teammate Davey Phillips who had a breakthrough year, his first in Belfast, finishing with 10 goals and 35 points in 71 games. Phillips had an outstanding World Championship in April, drawing loads of praise from the GB coaching staff who labelled him as the best of the new crop of British talent.
“I was very pleased with both of these guys last season,” said Coach Steve Thornton, “they both exceeded my expectations of them prior to the year beginning. Shields emerged as a genuine superstar in this league and was one of the most consistent players in the league. Phillips was our best all-round defencemen last season, and our most improved player. He is still so young and is only going to get better.”
Phillips moved from Hull Stingrays a year ago, while Shields returned to the Giants after previously wiining a league title in 2005/06 in Belfast. Both players were pleased to confirm their return to the Giants for another year.
“We had a great year last season, but we still have something to prove,” said Shields.
“I love playing in Belfast and I have confidence in Steve to put together another team that can contend for trophies. We won two last season, in a year filled with injuries to key players. I think we still have room for improvement.”
“I love it here in Belfast, the city, the fans, just everything,” said Phillips, “We had such a great group of guys last year, it made the season so much fun to be a part of. I think we will have another great team and hopefully be up there challenging for titles again.”
