Elite League Import Level To Revert To Ten

The Elite League is pleased to announce that the maximum import players for the 2011/12 season will revert back to 10 per team, further enhancing the opportunity for British-trained players.

Elite League chairman, Eamon Convery, said: “I think this is a fantastic decision for the sport of ice hockey in this country.

“All the owners are in agreement that the level should drop back down to 10 and I think it will be a move appreciated by supporters.

“This move will make the league even more competitive next season and it is a great opportunity to produce more top-class GB players for the future.”

How does this affect the Belfast Giants?
Currently the Giants have the maximum of 11 import players, so it means that Coach Doug Christiansen will be recruiting an additional British player to add to the already outstanding class of non-import players. Currently the Giants have Captain Colin Shields, Netminders Stephen Murphy and Nathan Craze, defenceman Graeme Walton and forwards Craig Peacock and Mark Garside all selected to the initial roster for the GB National Team. Convincing one more GB player to come to Belfast should not be a problem for Christiansen who has built his team around a solid core of British players.
