The number 3 did not stay vacant for long, as the Stena Line Belfast Giants moved in quickly to sign defenceman Jeff Mason after he left his Norwegian club earlier this month. Mason led the Elite League in points for a defender last season and was named to the first All-Star Team and EIHL Defender of the Year last season as he helped lead the Giants to the Elite League Title. The Massachusetts native enters his third year with the club and could play this weekend against the Sheffield Steelers.
Coach Doug Christiansen is thrilled with the addition of Mason:
“Jeff is a proven player in the league. He competes daily in practice and games. He has great speed and has a knack for scoring big goals. There is no doubt that Jeff Mason makes us a better team. I am very pleased with our team and did not expect to add a player like Mason but his availability was something I could not ignore. He is a team player and knows our scheme. Hopefully, he will hit the ground running and help is in the crucial games we have coming up.”
Mason added, “I am extremely excited to be returning to Belfast and look forward to contributing to what has already been a great start to the season for the team. Belfast has a long standing tradition of winning and doing things the right way. It it a great city with great fans and I look forward to pulling on the Belfast jersey once again with the intention of bringing more silverware to the Odyssey Arena.”
Mason lands in Belfast Thursday and the Giants have already been working behind the scenes to ensure he is cleared to play this Friday and Saturday against the Sheffield Steelers in a double header between the top two teams in the league. Both games are at the Odyssey Arena. Tickets are available through the Odyssey Box Office on (028) 9073 9074 or at www.ticketmaster.ie
