Zemlak Joins The Giants And Will Play Wednesday

Stena Line Belfast Giants netminder Stephen Murphy will be out of the line-up for an unknown period of time having sustained an injury in Saturday night’s dramatic comeback win over the Coventry Blaze at the Odyssey Arena.

Murphy who has started all of the Giants 34 games this season starred in the shootout win over Coventry and was assessed post game by the Giants medical staff who have ruled the British netminder out indefinitely with a groin injury.

As a result Head Coach Doug Christiansen and General Manager Todd Kelman have moved quickly and secured the services of Canadian netminder Garrett Zemlak who will make his Giants debut tomorrow night against his former club the Fife Flyers.

Zemlak who had an outstanding season in 2011/12 as a member of the Flyers made the move to Glasgow in the summer joining the Braehead Clan, a move that unfortunately didn’t pay off for the 23 year old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, as earlier this month he was released from his contract as the team struggled for consistency.

Defenceman Sam Roberts will also be out indefinitely following a scan that revealed a broken collarbone after a hit from Coventry defenceman Jeramie Domish early into Saturday Night’s game.

“We have been hit hard with injuries as of late, and losing Murph could have been disastrous, but we are happy that we were able to agree to terms with Garrett before he headed back to North America,” said Todd Kelman, “he had a few options in leagues over there but he wanted the opportunity here in Belfast and is looking forward to making his debut tomorrow night.”

The Giants take on the Fife Flyers at the Odyssey Arena on Wednesday Night at 7:30pm.
