The official launch of this season’s Belfast Giants Healthy Lifestyle programme in association with Subway took place on Thursday when Darryl Lloyd and Colin Shields accompanied by Giants Schools’ Co-ordinator Gordon Cameron visited St Patrick’s Primary School, Holywood.
They spoke to the young people about Healthy Lifestyle choices and the importance of exercise along with a balanced diet. Lloyd and Shields also gave the pupils of St.Patrick’s Primary School an insight into the daily training regime of a professional athlete and the importance that nutrition plays in their lives.
Speaking at the launch, Belfast Giants all-time leading points scorer Colin Shields said, “It’s vital for children to know the importance of eating right and living an active lifestyle. Thanks to Subway, this programme will visit over 100 schools and talk to 15,000 plus kids before the end of the season!”
Mark Brooks, Belfast Giants Marketing Manager said, “I firmly believe that what the Giants and Subway are doing is essential as we are giving these children the facts they need to help pursue a healthy lifestyle. I want to thank Gordon Cameron, a retired primary school teacher, who is responsible for making the Subway Healthy Lifestyle programme run smoothly year on year and it is through his hard work and commitment that thousands of primary school pupils get the to meet their ice hockey heroes as well as hear about the advantages of a healthy lifestyle in association with Subway.”
The pupils of St.Patrick’s listened intently to the information they were given about food choices and were really excited by the fact that they were shown exercises by two of the Belfast Giants! Thanks to Subway, all of the pupils will get to watch Shields and Lloyd in action again, this time at a home game at the Odyssey Arena before the season is out. Perhaps even more special was, thanks again to Subway, all pupils in attendance received a complimentary Subway treat!
The Belfast Giants wish to sincerely thank Subway for all their support in this important work that reaches out to thousands of young people each year around Northern Ireland.
