The Stena Line Belfast Giants lost out to the Nottingham Panthers at the National Ice Centre on Tuesday night. Despite two goals from Craig Peacock and a Calvin Elfring goal, the Panthers ran out 8-3 winners.
After both sides had settled in it was the hosts who took the lead with a goal from Leigh Salters at 9.07 on the powerplay and late on in the period David Clarke doubled his sides advantage, scoring at 18.36.
Only 79 seconds into period two Craig Peacock got Giants on the board but Panthers gave them no time to build on that and went 3-1 ahead at 23.43 thanks to a powerplay effort from Matt Francis. Salters then added his second at 30.13 only for Peacock to score what was his double at 31.12 but the last word in the session went to Panthers with Robert Lachowicz shooting his side 5-2 ahead at 36.44.
Again Giants scored early in the third period when Calvin Elfring fired in on the powerplay at 42.39 but that was as close as Paul Adey’s men were to get as Panthers stepped on the gas to score three more before the end.
Jonathan Boxill made it 6-3 at 44.10 and then third and fourth powerplay goals of the night for the hosts piled on the Giants misery. Petr Kalus scored number seven at 47.13 and Chris Capraro rounded it all off at 54.29.
A late fight between Salters and Giants Adam Keefe released some pent up aggression but this was Panthers at their attacking best and a warning shot for the league as a whole.
