Joining the ever swelling ranks of the Giants Legends are three names that will be swopping sides for the Rob Stewart Testimonial on Tuesday February 18th – Robby Sandrock, Colin Shields and Craig Peacock!
Robby Sandrock is one of the few players who could rival Rob Stewart for sheer power of shot from the blueline, a tool he is feared for to this very day. Sandrock lined up alongside Stewy in 2002 as Dave Whistle built the side that would lift the 2003 ISL Playoff Championship and the then 24 year old would be the only defenseman in Belfast Giants history to top the scoring charts for the season, his thunderous one-time shots a worry for any opposing defenseman or netminder who got in their way. With that playoff medal around his neck, Sandrock was to follow former Giants Head Coach Dave Whistle into the German DEL with the Iserlohn Roosters and subsequently carve out an impressive career in Europe, plying his trade in also in Austria and Croatia before returning to Belfast, joining Doug Christiansen’s team in 2012 where he continues to hold the blueline and terrorise netminders.
Colin Shields is now in his third stint with the club is quite simply a record breaker. The 34 year old Scot looks set fair to be the first Giant to punch through the 400 point mark in just over 300 games for the club and is still looking to add to his impressive haul of silverware with the Organisation. Another with a “full house” of the major trophies in the UK, “Sheds” was one of only two British players ever to be drafted to the NHL, a 6th round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers and has went on to represent Team GB 69 times and counting! Captained Belfast to the Playoff Championship in 2010 a season in which he picked up a raft of personal honours, EIHL Player of the Year, Top British Forward and Top British Scorer all as awarded by the IHJUK. About to join the exclusive “500 Club” in the Elite League – proof if it were ever need of quality and longevity!
Craig Peacock signed from the Peterborough Phantoms in 2009 after a scouting mission by Steve Thornton and Todd Kelman, and what an asset he has proven to be. Shredding records as he goes, Peaks has won a Monteith Bowl and a Playoff Championship with Belfast, successes that have seen his talents take him for a brief interlude to Denmark before slotting right back in at the club where he now calls home. A horrific injury in 2012 that saw him take 29 stitches to the lip and nose proved his commitment to the cause, only missing one game before strapping on the pads to face the Cardiff Devils the next weekend complete with a full face mask. Third all time in points with Belfast already after passing the legendary Jason Ruff and still only 25 who knows where this story will end.
The three current Giants join the list of Legends that includes Dave Whistle, Paxton Schulte, Kevin Riehl, Steve Thornton, Colin Ward, Curtis Huppe, Jason Bowen, Graeme Walton, Jeff Hoad, Mark Cavallin, Shane Johnson, Paul Sample, Leigh Jamieson and Nathan Craze! Don’t miss out – fans can purchase tickets for Rob Stewart’s Testimonial from the Odyssey Arena Box Office in person, by calling (028) 9073 9074 or online at Ticketmaster.
