The Stena Line Belfast Giants won 4-1 in Hull against the Stingrays in the first of two Playoff games in as many nights. The Giants will progress to next weekends’ Playoff Finals in Nottingham if they can hold into their lead by the end of Sunday’s return fixture at the Odyssey Arena, face-off 4pm.
Only a solitary goal in the opening period and it came the way of the home side at 9.21 as Omar Pacha scored with a powerplay goal to lead 1-0 at the first interval.
Two goals from the Giants at the start of the second period turned a one goal deficit into a one goal lead. They were level with only 34 seconds of the second period played with a goal from Colin Shields. Then at 21.10 they went in front as Chris Higgins was on target. They increased their lead at 24.17 with a goal from Jeffery Szwez to lead 3-1 after forty minutes.
Belfast had more of the chances in the third period but they had to wait until 57.10 to get their fourth as they netted with a powerplay goal from Kevin Saurette.
