Not only did the Giants unveil their new Head Coach on Monday Night, but they announced one of the biggest signings of the off-season when the fans were told that Calvin Elfring will be back for another season with the Giants.
Elfring came to Belfast last season after 7 years in the top German League with the Straubing Tigers. His impact was immediately felt in Belfast and throughout the Elite League as he solidified the defensive unit in Belfast and added another element to the powerplay for the Giants. He scored 13 goals and added 37 assists for 50 points in his first year as a Giant and was selected by the hometown fans as the Giants Defenceman of the Year.
On top of that, the Coaches and General Managers from the Elite League picked Elfring as the League’s Top Defenceman and, along with fellow Giants Rob Sandrock and Kevin Saurette, Elfring earned an Elite League First All-Star Team Selection to close out the 2013-14 season.
He was an instrumental part of the Elite League Championship win this past season and he returns to Belfast for another season hungry for more silverware.
New Head Coach Steve Thornton commented on the return of Elfring.
“It was a no-brainer for us to sign back Calvin for another year. Todd and I have been consulting on players for the last couple of weeks, and both of us had Elfring as a ‘must sign’ on our list. He does it all – he can lead the rush, he is strong in his own end, he skates well and he is great on the powerplay. I am pleased to have him back for next season.”
