This Saturday night at the game against the Cardiff Devils, the Stena Line Belfast Giants will show their support for World Diabetes Day – wearing specially commissioned jerseys for this great cause.
Fans attending Saturday’s game will have the chance to win a ‘Shirt Off The Back’ from each player with the full set of game worn jerseys up for grabs. Raffle tickets, only £2 each, will be available from 6pm throughout the Odyssey Arena with all proceeds going to Diabetes UK Northern Ireland. The prize draw will take place during the 3rd period with the winners presented with their special game worn jersey from the player on the ice after the game.
Every year on 14 November World Diabetes Day is celebrated and marked locally by Diabetes UK Northern Ireland encouraging people to ‘go blue’ for diabetes. Famous landmarks and buildings across the world also light up blue and here in Northern Ireland a number of local Councils have agreed to ‘go blue’ for diabetes and show their support for local people living with the condition.
This season the Stena Line Belfast Giants have joined forces with Diabetes UK Northern Ireland and will wear bespoke jerseys for the game against the Cardiff Devils on Saturday 8th November. Giants Defenceman Calvin Elfring has Type 1 diabetes and has been instrumental in getting this night organised.
Calvin Elfring said, “Since I was diagnosed last year with Type 1 diabetes I had to make a few changes to my everyday routine and learn about controlling my condition with insulin injections as well as staying fit and healthy. As a professional sportsman, obviously my primary concern was ‘when can I get back on the ice?’ I learnt quickly that I would need to respect my diabetes in order to manage it successfully and I am glad to say that it hasn’t hindered my career.
I wanted to help Diabetes UK Northern Ireland highlight World Diabetes Day as there is a lot to celebrate in terms of what has been achieved to make living with the condition easier. It is important that people know, whether it is Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes, that it doesn’t have to stop you from being a success in all that you do.
I am so happy that I have the full backing of my team to wear our Diabetes UK Northern Ireland jerseys and we are looking forward to winning big on the night as well as raising awareness about a condition that is impacting more and more people in Northern Ireland.”
Diabetes UK Northern Ireland Regional Fundraiser Naomi Brown said,
“We would like to thank Calvin Elfring and the whole Giants team for showing their support for World Diabetes Day and for wearing Diabetes UK Northern Ireland jerseys. We will be asking our supporters to come along to the game on Saturday night and wear blue so that we can all play a part in the ‘go blue’ for diabetes campaign.
To have such a positive role model like Calvin successfully managing his Type 1 diabetes is a great inspiration to the many children and young people also living with Type 1 diabetes. Whether it is Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes it is hugely important to know that despite being a lifelong condition, with the right support and management, you can still achieve great things. Having the Giants help tell that story is a giant coup for the diabetes family in Northern Ireland.”
