The Stena Line Belfast Giants are pleased to announce that Matt Nickerson, a 6’4” Defenceman, has signed a contract with the organisation for the 2015/16 Elite League season.
A solid defenceman, selected 99th overall in the 2003 NHL draft by the Dallas Stars, Nickerson comes to Belfast straight from Elite League rivals, the Fife Flyers, after spending the past two seasons in Scotland with the Gardiner Conference side.
The 30 year old from Connecticut, USA brings to Belfast experience of playing for the AHL’s Iowa Stars and Springfield Falcons as well as two seasons spent in the Finnish Elite League with Ässät and Ilves and he is looking forward to his first season in Belfast.
“I’m really looking forward to the upcoming season and to hoping to help the Giants bring back the championship again as I know the Giants have a long history of success and winning,” said Nickerson. “I’m excited and cannot wait for August to arrive – i’m counting down the days until the hockey season!”
Nickerson amassed 538 minutes in penalties in his previous two Elite League seasons and Steve Thornton expects his new recruit to bring toughness to next season’s lineup,
“Last season we were not big enough or mean enough on defence and were too easy to play against. I wanted to have our toughness within our d-corps this year and I felt that Matt knew what his job was, can stick up for his teammates and can also play. He has good feet and he is still at tat stage in his career where he is still going up. He will hold teams accountable – he’ll be able to instigate something when we’re a few goals down and I believe he’ll be a fans favourite here in Belfast.”
