Giants Get Fife Weekend Off To A Flyer

The Stena Line Belfast Giants moved up to third in the Elite League standings with a 5-3 victory over Fife Flyers at The SSE Arena, Belfast. Goals from Forney, Rutherford, Nickerson, Boxill and Desmarais gave the home side the two points.

Belfast began the game without Brandon Benedict, Derrick Walser and Johan Ejdepalm who were all scratched as well as Craig Peacock who missed out through suspension.

The visitors opened the scoring as Michael Dorr scored his 19th goal of the season on the powerplay at 9:12, assisted by Kyle Haines and Shayne Stockton.

Nico Sacchetti doubled their lead, again with a man advantage, at 20:31 as the visitors gave their large travelling support a 2-0 lead to cheer.

However the Giants were on level terms by the second intermission with Michael Forney scoring at 22:20 followed by a nice David Rutherford goal at 37:07.

Former Flyer Matt Nickerson scored his fourth goal of the season at 44:33, assisted by Michael Forney and Jonathan Boxill notched up a fourth for the home side at 53:56.

Both sides meet again in Belfast on Saturday at The SSE Arena – face-off 7pm.
