The Stena Line Belfast Giants posted an emphatic 5-2 win over the Sheffield Steelers on the first of back-to-back league games in the Sheffield Arena this weekend.
The visitors led 4-0 at the end of an impressive opening period and were cheered on all game by a loud travelling support.
The Giants, who started with Jackson Whistle in net, opened the scoring in Sheffield when Chris Higgins slammed a loose puck past Mustukovs in the Steelers net at 5:38, assisted by Michael Forney and Jim Vandermeer.
Less than three minutes later and the visitors had doubled their lead. This time it was Michael Quesnele who netted for the Giants, assisted by Blair Riley and Jim Vandermeer at 8:27.
The Belfast scoring continued when David Rutherford netted his second of the game at 17:24. Rutherford’s goal, assisted by Michael Forney and Blair Riley gave the Giants a 4-0 lead at the end of AJ impressive opening period.
Into the final period and the Steelers had an opportunity to score their second of the game at 50:27 when they were awarded a penalty shot. However Jackson Whistle stood tall and Fretter missed.
Luke Ferrara netted a late consolation goal for the home side when he scored with 36 seconds remaining.
Soon after, the final hooter sounded to round off a famous night for the Belfast Giants and their large number of travelling fans.
The Giants and Steelers do it all over again on Sunday when they come face-to-face for the second time in as many days. Face-Off in Sheffield on Sunday is 5pm.
