Giants Weather Storm With Five Star Home Win

The Stena Line Belfast Giants closed the gap on first place to seven points with a 5-2 home win over the Manchester Storm. Two goals each for Blair Riley and Colin Shields as well as an opening goal from Michael Forney gave the Giants the important win on Saturday at The SSE Arena.

The Giants opened the scoring at 5:00 when Michael Forney got the final touch after a scramble in front of the net, unassisted on the powerplay.

1:46 later and the Giants had doubled their lead. This time it was Blair Riley who deflected Matt Nickerson’s shot into the Storm net.

Colin Shields extended the Giants lead at 15:24, assisted by James Desmarais and Jim Vandermeer. However the away side pulled one back near the end of the period when Trevor Johnson scored on the powerplay at 18:24.

Blair Riley restored the home side’s three goal advantage at 43:58, assisted by Chris Higgins and Derrick Walser.

Colin Shields rounded off the Giants victory with an empty net finish for his second goal of the game at 59:23.

The Giants return to action again on Friday and Sunday at home against the Nottingham Panthers. Tickets are on sale now online at ticketmaster.ie as well as from The SSE Arena Box Office either in person or by calling 028 9073 9074.
