Ryan Martinelli Returns To The Giants Blueline

The Stena Line Belfast Giants are pleased to announce that defenceman Ryan Martinelli will return for the 2017/18 Elite League season.

Martinelli, 6’ 5”, joined the Giants blueline in 2016 from Székesfehérvár of the Austrian Hockey League thanks to our partnership with the Ulster University Business School. During the 2016/17 season, the 30 year old posted four goals and 17 assists, good for 21 points in 61 games played for the Giants.

Prior to his arrival in Belfast, Martinelli played for the the OHL’s London Knights and the University of Western Ontario before moving to Europe to sign with Valpellice of Italy.

The right-shot d-man moved to Rosenborg of Norway for 2012/13, wearing an ‘A’ for the team before joining the Fischtown Pinguins where he won a league championship with the German side and played against the Giants in the 2014/15 Continental Cup.

Ryan Martinelli spoke to Patrick Smyth, A View From The Bridge, on returning for the 2017/18 season:

“I am really happy to be back and excited to spend another season in Belfast chasing trophies.”

“Coming into the new season, I know what to expect from the league. I am expecting more from my own performance and hoping to be able to contribute even more than last year. The league will be stronger next season and I am looking forward to it.”

“Adam Keefe will do a great job as Head Coach, he knows what it takes to win in this league.”

Adam Keefe, Head Coach, on the signing of Ryan Martinelli:

“Ryan is a great guy to have around the locker room. He is a big guy who skates well and is mean in front of the net. He is a winner, who won a league title in Germany.”

“I know many Giants fans really took to Ryan last season as he plays hard for the team every night. We are excited to have him return.”
