“We’re not here to take part – we’re here to take over. We want to win everything. We do not want second place, we want to compete for every trophy possible” – Adam Keefe
That is the challenge that Stena Line Belfast Giants Head Coach Adam Keefe has outlined for his team if they are to win silverware this season. The Giants sit second, five points behind the Cardiff Devils following Friday’s 5-2 win over the Nottingham Panthers.
“We would have liked to come out better tonight,” said Keefe – talking to Simon Kitchen, A View From The Bridge. “We were not great at the very start and I thought they were. They caused us trouble early on and scored a few goals because of that. Ultimately throughout the second and third period we took the game back over.”
Coack Keefe was impressed by the Giants team defence, backstopped by Jackson Whistle who recovered from conceding two goals inside the opening four minutes, to shut down the Panthers for the remainder of the game.
“We stuck to the game plan tonight and I thought we could have scored more tonight. We did not give up many quality chances and when we did, Jackson Whistle was there to shut the door.”
The two teams will do it all over again on Saturday night at The SSE Arena, face-off 7pm, and Adam Keefe wants his players to refocus ahead of another vital home game,
“The message is ‘great job tonight, go home, get some rest, eat, come back and do it all over again tomorrow’. We will see a better Nottingham Panthers team on Saturday and they are certainly going to come hard. We need to start our game on Saturday the way Nottingham started on Friday.”
With the end of the Elite League season less than three months away, Coach Keefe recognises that every point is important at this stage if the Giants are to mount a challenge for the trophies on offer.
“We are down to the nitty gritty here – this is playoff hockey. We’re down to the last few months and we need to be ready to play every night, or we will not win the league.”
Tickets for Saturday’s Giants vs Nottingham Panthers clash are available from The SSE Arena Box Office all day Saturday until face-off either in person or by calling 028 9073 9074 as well as via the Ticketmaster website.
