The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Milton Keynes Lightning 10-4 on Wednesday night in Belfast. Goals from Saviano x2, Connolly x2, Rutherford x2, Shields, Riley, Vandermeer and Sylvestre game the Giants an impressive home win.
Wednesday’s win sees the Giants move up to third position in the standings with only two league games remaining before the playoffs begin.
Connolly And Shields Cancel Out King Goal
Kevin King opened the scoring on Wednesday night’s league clash, giving MK the lead at 3:31, assisted by Carl Hudson and Denny Kearney.
Brendan Connolly equalised at 8:33 after redirecting Sebastien Sylvestre’s shot from the blue line at 8:33.
Colin Shields’ strike at 18:47 gave the hosts a 2-1 lead going into the intermission when he rifled into the MK net, assisted by Brendan Connolly and Spiro Goulakos.
Giants Four-midable In Middle Period
Steve Saviano’s middle period double helped the Giants to a three goal advantage. First Saviano struck at 25:57, assisted by Dustin Johner and Matt Towe, before his second of the period at 14:55 with an unassisted shorthanded effort.
David Rutherford made it 5-1 at 16:12 with a fine low shot underneath Pacl in the Lightning net, assisted by Blair Riley and Darcy Murphy.
Blair Riley got in on the scoring at 19:05 when he fired into the top shelf of the MK net, assisted by David Rutherford and Kevin Raine.
Giants Dominate Final Period To Seal Win
Denny Kearney opened the scoring in the final period, assisted by Kevin King and James Griffin.
However David Rutherford hit back almost immediately, scoring 31 seconds later, assisted by Darcy Murphy.
Brendan Connolly grabbed his second goal of the game at 50:21 with a fine unassisted finish.
Andrew Dickson replaced Chris Truehl in the Giants net as the Northern Irish netminder helped the Giants complete a Wednesday home win.
Jim Vandermeer netted on his return from injury, assisted by David Rutherford at 51:30 before Lewis Hook scored MK’s third goal at 52:56, assisted by Alex Forbes.
Sebastien Sylvestre scored a highlight reel goal at 53:36, stick handling his way through the Lightning defence to score past Pacl, assisted by Jim Vandermeer.
Ben Foster rounded off the scoring at 58:57 with MK’s fourth goal, assisted by Denny Kearney and Kevin King.
