Stunning Second Seals Win for Giants
Four goals in the second period helped the Belfast Giants to a 6-1 road win at the Fife Ice Arena against the Flyers on Saturday night.
First Period
Much like they did on Wednesday night against Coventry, the Giants started the game with an early penalty as Kyle Osterberg was penalised for tripping after just 48 seconds. They rode that penalty out and took the lead on 04:38 when P.O. Morin was quickest to react when Shane Owen made a good save from Bo Hanson’s shot. (0-1)
It would soon be the hosts’ turn to go on the penalty kill when Daniel Krenzelok was penalised for boarding. However, the visitors could not take advantage of that and were given a second penalty of their own when Jordan Kawaguchi was sat down for tripping. The Flyers went after the Giants straight from the off on the man-advantage with Jackson Whistle called into action to make two excellent saves from Jordy Stallard and Austin Farley. However, there was nothing he could do to stop Massimo Carazzo when he swept home a pass from Ryan Foss on 12:34 (1-1). A third Giants penalty to Bo Hanson would go unpunished while Josh Roach had a powerful shot saved by Owen as the two teams went into the first intermission all square.
Second Period
After a back-and-forth opening four and a half minutes in the second, the Giants took the lead and never looked back. A faceoff in the Fife zone was won by Scott Conway and the puck found its way to Mike Lee. The Connecticut defenseman unleashed a pile driver of a shot that flashed past Owen to give the visitors their lead back (1-2). Adam Keefe’s men didn’t stop there and had Fife penned in but the third goal was a bit of an oddity. Conway’s shot went wide but the rebound off the boards behind landed the puck in the crease and it somehow squeezed over the line. JJ Piccinich was in the vicinity but the Giants’ number 10 was credited with the goal. (1-3)
The Giants had barely finished celebrating when Karl Boudrias was sprung loose by a Hanson pass and showed quick hands with the stick and composure to finish neatly on the break just over 20 seconds later. (1-4). Not content with their lot, the Giants continued to pile the pressure on and, after another face-off win, Lee was unselfish and squared it to Ben Lake to thrash home for the fifth on 32:18 (1-5).
Third Period
The third period was slightly less eventful as the Giants continued to control proceedings, limiting Fife chances. Hanson had a shot well stopped by Owen who had a very credible evening in goal and he stopped the Conway rebound too. The Giants thought that they had a goal late on when, after Zak Galambos’ effort was saved, Piccinich forced the puck towards the net and the goal light went on but play continued. After a video review, the officials decided there was not enough evidence to award the goal. However, Morin book-ended the night with goals as he squeezed home a rebound from close range on 56:27 after Bobo Carpenter had sent the puck towards the net. (1-6)
